The Journal of Earth and Marine Technology (JEMT), published by Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian Masyarakat – Institut Teknologi Adhi Tama Surabaya (LPPM – ITATS), is a peer-reviewed scientific journal committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics, research integrity, editorial transparency, and professional responsibility.
This statement applies to all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, editors, reviewers, and the publisher. JEMT follows the principles and best practices established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and relevant international standards for scholarly publishing.
The publication of articles in JEMT contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge in earth sciences, marine technology, environmental engineering, geospatial studies, coastal systems, ocean engineering, renewable marine resources, and related interdisciplinary fields. Therefore, all published works must uphold honesty, transparency, reproducibility, and scientific accountability.
Editorial decisions in JEMT are independent from commercial interests, sponsorship, institutional pressure, or personal relationships.
1. ETHICAL GUIDELINES FOR JOURNAL PUBLICATION
Submitted manuscripts must:
- be original and unpublished;
- not be under consideration by another journal or publisher;
- fall within the scope of JEMT;
- present scientifically valid and ethically conducted research;
- properly acknowledge all sources and contributions.
JEMT does not tolerate:
- plagiarism;
- data fabrication or falsification;
- duplicate publication;
- citation manipulation;
- unethical authorship practices;
- peer-review manipulation;
- undisclosed conflicts of interest.
All manuscripts are evaluated solely based on academic merit, methodological rigor, originality, clarity, and relevance to the journal's scope.
2. DUTIES OF AUTHORS
2.1 Originality and Submission Policy
Authors must ensure that submitted manuscripts are entirely original works. Any use of others’ ideas, text, figures, datasets, or methods must be appropriately cited. Manuscripts submitted to JEMT:
- must not have been previously published in any language;
- must not be simultaneously submitted to another journal;
- must not substantially overlap with previously published work without clear citation and justification.
Duplicate submission and redundant publication constitute unethical publishing behavior.
2.2 Reporting Standards
Authors must present:
- accurate research methods;
- valid and reproducible findings;
- objective interpretation of results.
The manuscript must contain sufficient methodological detail to allow replication by other researchers. Fraudulent, fabricated, manipulated, or intentionally misleading statements are unacceptable.
2.3 Data Availability and Reproducibility
Authors may be requested to provide:
- raw data;
- laboratory records;
- simulation outputs;
- codes or software scripts;
- geospatial datasets;
- supplementary materials.
Where possible, authors are encouraged to deposit datasets in institutional, national, or international repositories. Data should remain accessible for at least 10 years after publication unless legal, ethical, or confidentiality restrictions apply. For computational, geospatial, marine, or environmental studies, authors should provide sufficient metadata, model configuration details, and methodological transparency to support reproducibility.
2.4 Plagiarism and Similarity Screening
JEMT conducts originality screening using plagiarism detection software as part of the editorial assessment process.
Plagiarism includes:
- direct copying;
- paraphrasing without attribution;
- unattributed translation;
- data plagiarism;
- figure manipulation;
- self-plagiarism or redundant reuse of substantial material.
Similarity scores alone do not determine misconduct. Editorial evaluation considers context, citation practices, and scientific integrity.
2.5 Authorship, Contribution, and Responsibilities
Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made a significant intellectual contribution to the conception, design, execution, interpretation of the reported study, and manuscript drafting or critical revision in accordance with ICMJE authorship criteria. All co-authors must have reviewed and approved the final version of the manuscript prior to submission.
The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring all eligible contributors are included, no inappropriate authors are listed, and all co-authors approve revisions and publication decisions. Individuals providing technical, financial, language-editing, or administrative support should be acknowledged appropriately but not listed as authors unless authorship criteria are fulfilled.
Any changes to authorship after submission — including additions, deletions, or reordering of authors — require written justification submitted to the Editor-in-Chief and written approval from all listed authors.
Where applicable, research involving human participants, animal subjects, or sensitive environmental data must comply with relevant ethical standards, and authors should state the ethical approval obtained in the Methods section.
2.6 Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies
JEMT maintains a separate Generative AI Policy that governs the acceptable use of AI-assisted technologies in manuscript preparation, data processing, image generation, and editorial workflows. Authors are required to comply with this policy. Please see the Generative AI Policy.
2.7 Citation Ethics
Authors must ensure that all citations:
- are academically relevant;
- accurately represent prior work;
- contribute meaningfully to scholarly discussion.
Citation manipulation and coercive citation practices are prohibited. Excessive self-citation without scientific justification may be subject to editorial review.
2.8 Acknowledgement of Sources
All sources influencing the work must be acknowledged appropriately.
Information obtained through:
- confidential communication;
- peer review;
- grant evaluation;
- private discussion;
must not be used without explicit written permission.
2.9 Conflict of Interest Disclosure
Authors must disclose all financial or non-financial conflicts of interest that could influence the research or interpretation of findings.
Examples include:
- funding sources;
- institutional relationships;
- consulting activities;
- employment;
- stock ownership;
- patents;
- personal or academic relationships.
All funding sources must be declared clearly within the manuscript.
2.10 Ethical Approval and Human or Animal Subjects
Research involving:
- human participants;
- animals;
- hazardous materials;
- sensitive object sites;
must comply with applicable institutional and legal ethical standards.
Authors must provide:
- ethics approval information;
- informed consent statements where applicable;
- permits or regulatory approvals if required.
Participant privacy and confidentiality must be protected.
2.11 Fundamental Errors in Published Works
If authors identify significant errors after publication, they must promptly notify the editor and cooperate in:
- correction;
- clarification;
- retraction;
- republication where necessary.
Failure to disclose known errors may constitute misconduct.
2.12 Complaints and Appeals
Authors who believe an editorial decision was made in error or without proper consideration of their manuscript may submit a formal appeal to the Editor-in-Chief at [email protected].
Appeals must include: (1) the manuscript ID and title, (2) a clear statement of the grounds for reconsideration, and (3) a point-by-point response to reviewer comments if applicable. The Editor-in-Chief will review the appeal and provide a written response within 10 days.
Complaints regarding editorial conduct, conflicts of interest, or suspected publication ethics violations may also be submitted to the same address and will be handled confidentially in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.
