Abstract

Heat exposure on the production floor is one of the hazards workers face during palm oil processing. It comes mainly from several machines on the floor, raising heart rate, speeding up the onset of fatigue, and disrupting workers' physiological condition. This study set out to analyze the environmental temperature on the production floor and workers' cardiovascular load, and to determine how environmental temperature affects their physiology. The methods used were the heat stress index, cardiovascular load, and simple regression analysis. Results showed the highest heat stress index was recorded at the boiler station, at 143%. Eleven workers across the work stations fell into the "improvement needed" category for cardiovascular load. Temperature had a positive effect on workers' heart rate, with a coefficient of 0.010; each 1°C rise in temperature was estimated to increase heart rate by 2.18 beats per minute.
