Abstract

The management of used syringe waste in healthcare facilities still presents risks during storage, transfer, and destruction of infectious sharps. This study presents NECIS (Needle Crusher Integrated System), a portable prototype designed to process syringe needles and plastic barrels at the point of care. NECIS integrates a high-torque rotary shredder, UV-C treatment, magnetic segregation, and Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring in a fully enclosed, battery-powered unit. The development stages comprised needs identification, mechanical and electrical design, fabrication and assembly, dashboard development, functional testing, microbiological testing, magnetic segregation testing, and field demonstration. The rotary shredder simultaneously processed metal needles and plastic syringe barrels into fragments up to 5 mm without stalling, although the measured processing time was approximately 30 s, exceeding the initial 8–10 s target. UV-C treatment reduced microorganisms by 89.25% after 60 s of exposure, while magnetic segregation attracted 1,000 g of a 1,087 g needle sample, corresponding to 91.99%. The IoT subsystem displayed operational status and supported real-time monitoring and control through a web dashboard. The prototype was demonstrated at three healthcare facilities and received positive user responses, with recommendations concerning operational safety, further UV-C validation, operational information, and adaptation to user needs.
